Julia Kim

Julia is an active freelance musician in Toronto performing with numerous orchestras. As a solo cellist, she has given numerous recitals throughout Canada, Finland,
Germany, Korea, and the U.S. Her playing is described as powerful, passionate, and emotional.
As an orchestral musician, she has performed throughout the US and Canada
under the baton of Maestro Bramwell Tovey, Leonard Slatkin, Gemma New, Mario Venzago, and many more.
Equally versatile as a chamber musician, she has studied
chamber music under members of the Beaux Arts Trio and the Fine Arts Quartet. Her work as a chamber musician was recognized at the Leonard Sorkin
Institute of Chamber Music and earned the Advanced Certificate in Chamber Music
Performance. She has performed alongside artists such as Frans Helmerson, Mihaela Martin, and Young-Chang Cho. She studied at McGill University under renowned Canadian cellist Elizabeth Dolin and at Indiana University where she was a student of the legendary cellist Janos Starker.
A passionate educator, Julia specialized in String Pedagogy in teaching methods for cello and worked at the String Academy of Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin. She is a recipient of various grants and awards including a President’s Award from the University of Wisconsin, Janos Starker Scholarship and Eva Heinitz Prize from Indiana University, a Career Grant from the Canada Council of the Arts, and an Artist Development Grant from FACTOR Canada. FACTOR is supporting her project “Home”, a recording project for music by Korean and Canadian composers.
Julia earned her doctorate in Cello Performance at the University of Toronto in November 2021.
